Ely Garden Villagers, is a community based group from Ely who got together to save our only green recreation fields in Ely which had been earmarked for 330 houses.
We were successful and so thankful for the fantastic support and backing that we had from our local community.
We believe we have changed Ely for the better.
We have held many community events including
Fire work displays (with the help of many volunteers from the local community). We have regular fun day events the latest being the Elympics where 96 children from eight different junior schools and parents took part in a traditional sports day event. This event will be an ongoing annual event. We work in partnerships, with Tidy towns, Communities 1st, Neighbourhood management and Council Play & Youth.
The area we saved is now used on various nights for
football training which is organised ourselves and Cardiff Hibbs (a local football club). Last year we registered 2 football teams – this year we have increased it to 5 football teams.
We also get contacted on a regular basis to get fly tipping removed. Cleaning up Ely
While working in partnership with Tidy Towns the children and youths regularly take part in litter picks in the area, This has given them a sense of ownership and respect since getting the children and youths involved the trouble and antisocial behaviour that was once associated with our recreation field has all but stopped.
